The different kind of cat litters, how do they work.?
Work in a pet store and I don't own a cat but many people come to the store asking about the best cat litter, which one doesn't track, whats the difference between crystals, clay and regular litter? thanks I just started and I want to help my customers the best way that I can.
Gravel Non-Clumping: Basic and cheap, this one tracks the worst in the home, and usually has the most dust caused by dumping the bag and the cat scratching around in the litter pan.
Clay-Based Clumping: This one has less dust than the above mentioned litter, and has clay that absorbs the moisture from kitty pees and poops and forms clumps that are easily picked up by a litter scoop. Some people do not like to use clumping litter due to the risk of masses forming internally if a cat is pre-disposed to eating the litter, as kittens often do.
Silicon-Based: The silica crystals that make up this litter are very porous and so absorb moisture easily. A lot of people like this litter because you don't have to change it out as often or add new as often as clumping or regular litter, because you stir the crystals until they turn a yellow color, then it is time to change. They also take care of almost all odor from urine which is sometimes a good selling point for people with male cats (especially intact male cats). Also, cats with asthma or other respiratory problems may benefit from a switch to this type of litter.
Biodegradable Litter: I put all the corn, oat, newspaper pellet, pine pellet, etc type litter into this category, and it is basically popular due to its ability to degrade in the environment, flush down the toilet, and for it;s non-carcinogenic properties. These are also good for asthmatic kitties as they produce little to no dust.
